How do I create a Discord webhook?

Step-by-step guide to creating a Discord channel webhook for use with Yeethook.

To receive notifications in Discord, you need a channel webhook URL. Discord webhooks are built into every server, so there is no bot to invite and no OAuth flow to approve. This guide walks you through creating one.

Prerequisites

  • A Discord server where you have the Manage Webhooks permission (server owners and admins have it by default)
  • A text channel where you want to receive notifications

Step-by-step

1. Open the channel settings

In Discord, hover over the channel where you want Yeethook to post (e.g. #app-events) and click the gear icon next to the channel name to open Edit Channel.

2. Create a webhook

In the channel settings sidebar, click Integrations, then Webhooks, and click New Webhook.

Discord creates a webhook with a default name and avatar. You can optionally rename it (e.g. "Yeethook"). Messages always post as Yeethook regardless of the name you choose, so this only affects how the webhook is listed in Discord's settings.

A webhook can only post messages to the channel it belongs to. It cannot read messages or access anything else in your server. For more details, see Is a Discord webhook safe to use?.

3. Copy the webhook URL

Expand the webhook you just created and click Copy Webhook URL. It looks like:

https://discord.com/api/webhooks/000000000000000000/XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX

Treat this URL like a password. Anyone who has it can post to your channel.

Add to Yeethook

In Yeethook, go to Channels and click Add channel (or use the Connect a channel step in the setup wizard):

  1. Select the Discord tab. If you paste a Discord URL while the Slack tab is selected, Yeethook switches to the Discord tab automatically.
  2. Paste the webhook URL you copied
  3. Add a label (e.g. "#app-events") so you can identify it later
  4. Optionally select the apps that should send events to this channel
  5. Click Create

Yeethook encrypts the webhook URL and starts delivering notifications to your Discord channel. Use Send test event from the channel's actions menu to confirm everything works.

Troubleshooting

  • "Invalid webhook URL" error -- make sure the URL starts with https://discord.com/api/webhooks/ followed by the webhook ID and token. URLs on discordapp.com and the ptb. and canary. subdomains are also accepted. Other URLs (such as a channel link or an invite link) are not.
  • Not receiving notifications -- check that the webhook still exists under Edit Channel > Integrations > Webhooks. If it was deleted, Yeethook deactivates the channel. Reactivate it with a fresh webhook URL.
  • Want to change the channel? -- create a new webhook in the new Discord channel, then update the webhook URL in Yeethook. You can also move an existing webhook to another channel from Discord's webhook settings; the URL stays the same.
