Learn about the BACKGROUND_ASSET_VERSION_EXTERNAL_BETA_RELEASE_STATE_UPDATED webhook event. Fired when a background asset external beta release state changes.

App Store ConnectBackground Assets
background_asset_version_external_beta_release_state_updated

The BACKGROUND_ASSET_VERSION_EXTERNAL_BETA_RELEASE_STATE_UPDATED event fires when the external beta release state of a background asset version changes. This tracks whether your background assets are available for external TestFlight testers.

When does it fire?

This event triggers during the beta release lifecycle of background assets — for example, when assets are approved for external testing distribution or when the release state changes.

Payload highlights

The payload includes the app ID, asset version identifier, and the new external beta release state. This is relevant for teams that need background assets available during TestFlight beta testing.

How Yeethook helps

Beta testers need the full app experience, including background assets. Yeethook notifies your team when background assets are cleared for external beta distribution, ensuring your testers get the complete experience.

Common use cases

  • Track background asset availability for external TestFlight testing
  • Coordinate beta releases that depend on background asset availability
  • Get alerts when asset beta distribution is blocked or delayed

Example payload

Byte for byte the same shape as the App Store release event; the instance type is the only thing that distinguishes them. There is no build number, tester group or asset name anywhere in the payload.

Questions about background_asset_version_external_beta_release_state_updated

Do background assets go through review before external testing?

The documented state values include IN_REVIEW and REJECTED, so this is the asset counterpart to TestFlight beta review. It runs independently of the build, which reports its own review outcome on BUILD_BETA_DETAIL_EXTERNAL_BUILD_STATE_UPDATED.

Does this fire for internal testers as well?

No. Internal distribution has its own event, BACKGROUND_ASSET_VERSION_INTERNAL_BETA_RELEASE_CREATED, and Apple publishes no state-updated event on the internal track at all.

Can I see which tester group is affected?

Not from the webhook. The attributes stop at timestamp, oldState and newState, and the single relationship points at the external beta release record, so tester groups and build numbers have to be fetched from the App Store Connect API.
